TPLbrochure1 copy.JPG (265809 bytes)New York's Community Gardens -
A Resource at Risk

The Trust for Public Land announces the publication of a new report that reviews the value of community gardens in New York City and presents a case for their ongoing support. Click on the title above to go to this important report. It is available for downloading in PDF format.

The picture above (click on snapshot to enlarge) appeared on the cover of a TPL brochure in 1984 after the successful campaign that transferred Clinton Community Garden to permanent parkland status. It shows the original design of Clinton Community Garden.

Community Garden Legislative Report

by Adam Honigman

There are several pro community garden progressive pieces of legislation for the 2001-2002 legislative session that have been sponsored and/or co-sponsored by our local elected officials in the NYC Council, the NY State Senate and the NY State Assembly. Unfortunately, all of these bills, which would establish community gardens as a legitimate land use (and thus preserve them), have not been permitted (by committee chairs and speakers of the Council, Senate and Assembly) to come to the floor for a vote.

The bills are:

NYC Council Intros: 742/743 - which is proposed to preserve community gardens by defining them as a legitimate land use is co-sponsored by our Councilperson, Christine Quinn. Click here to view 742. Duane is to amend the city charter to have GreenThumb community gardens reviewable under the NYC Uniform Land Use Review Process. Click here to access NYS Legislative Bills.
